City Fitness Joins East Market as Largest Retail Tenant

Philadelphia (May 18, 2017)National Real Estate Development, LLC (“National Development”)  today announced that City Fitness has leased 26,916 square feet inside its new building at the corner of 12th and Market Streets, part of its East Market, mixed-use project in Center City. East Market is owned by National Real Estate Advisors; JOSS Realty Partners; Young Capital LLC; and SSH Real Estate. Set to open in the summer of 2018, the City Fitness location at East Market is now the transformative project’s largest retailer and will occupy the entire second floor of the building’s two-story retail podium. Its entrance will be located on 12th Street next to the recently announced Wawa store location, opening in spring 2018.

“We are proud that City Fitness has become East Market’s latest – and largest – retail partner,” said Dan Killinger, Managing Director, National Development. “In just a decade, City Fitness has established itself as an active leader in Philadelphia’s health and fitness space as well as in the local community. Its new facility at East Market will be a fantastic amenity to the neighborhood with its innovative training options for those who will live and work here.  We hope City Fitness will become an integral part of their daily routine.”

Tom Wingert, Marketing Director for City Fitness said, “We’ve started to think about our gyms as community institutions – places where thousands of people go to better themselves every day, and build relationships with their best selves – and others – that extend outside of the gym. We’re extremely excited to be a part of the broader redevelopment of Center City Philadelphia for exactly that reason; it’s our goal to bring an element of health and wellness to the trajectory of this emerging neighborhood as a whole.”

Founded in the Northern Liberties neighborhood in Philadelphia, City Fitness has become Philadelphia’s fitness authority. In its ongoing effort to build a healthier Philadelphia, the fitness leader has opened three locations since its founding: Graduate Hospital, South Philadelphia and, most recently, Fishtown. In September of this year, shortly after the company’s 10th anniversary, City Fitness will open its fifth club – City Fitness Logan Square; this will be followed shortly by the East Market location in 2018.

City Fitness prides itself on providing members with cutting-edge fitness programming and technologies. As such, City Fitness East Market will feature a number of amenities including Personal Training powered by Thrive, real-time MYZONE effort tracking and a full catalog of group exercise classes. It will also offer its members premium post-workout and recovery services through saunas and HydroMassage beds.

The East Market project, located on the full city block from Market to Chestnut Streets and 11th to 12th Streets, combines shopping and dining options with sophisticated apartments and contemporary workspaces, designed by BLT Architects and Morris Adjmi Architects, respectively. Its second residential building will feature 240 residential units, with award-winning brewpub Iron Hill, local convenience retailer Wawa and now, City Fitness, as its anchors on Market Street. East Market will also offer 322 residential units in The Ludlow and collaborative office space at 1100 Ludlow.
